What is the IMRAD standard

Overview

IMRAD is the classic structure of a scientific article: Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion.

Main content

Why IMRAD is needed

This structure helps present research in a consistent and understandable way. The reader immediately sees why the work was conducted, how it was performed, what was obtained, and how the author explains the results.

Therefore IMRAD is convenient

  • for the author — as a text framework;
  • for the reviewer — as a clear evaluation scheme;
  • for the reader — as a logical path through the article.

How IMRAD is structured

Introduction — In the introduction, the author shows what problem is being considered, why the topic is important, and what the aim of the research is. The question, task, or hypothesis is formulated here.

Methods — This section explains exactly how the study was conducted: what materials were used, what procedures were applied, how data were collected, and how analysis was performed. This section shows how transparent and reproducible the research is.

Results — Here the factual findings of the research are presented: numerical data, observations, tables, graphs, identified relationships, and differences. This section is about what was obtained, not how to interpret it.

Discussion — In the discussion, the author explains the meaning of the obtained results: what they mean, how important they are, how they relate to other works, what limitations exist, and what conclusions can be drawn. This is where results turn into scientific explanation.

Why this structure is considered standard

  • it makes the article logical;
  • readable;
  • convenient for peer review;
  • clear for re-checking;
  • suitable for scholarly communication.

It is especially characteristic of original research articles. At the same time, not all genres must follow it strictly. For example, reviews, case reports, editorials, and some other types of materials may be structured differently.

When IMRAD is especially important

IMRAD is especially useful where the article describes the author’s own research. In such a text, it is important not only to report the conclusion, but also to show the path by which it was reached.

What is important to remember

IMRAD is not just a formality, but a convenient and stable logic of a scientific article: first the problem, then methods, then results and their explanation.
